Girls on the Run includes a community project within its program. Each season every team chooses a project that enhances their community and represents the teams collective interests.
We spend several lessons talking about what community means to each girl and show them that they too can contribute.
Last season, spring 2016, Red Mountain Elementary's Girls on the Run team chose to support women serving in the National Guard. The girls put together care packages for twenty women, along with encouraging messages and thank you notes. The team at Vista was interested in helping homeless animals in our area. They put together a project for Providing Animals with Support (P.A.W.S.) and crafted homemade toys for the cats and dogs at the shelter. They also created adoption signs for each animal in need of a home and there were over forty at the time!
It is great to watch the girls work together and watch the community project unfold. Many girls do not recognize that they have the ability to contribute and impact their community until they see for themselves what this project does for the people (or animals) involved.
